Clownin on U Hoes

June 7, 2015

Story by Jeff Ermann / Jeff@ShellMag.com When Rob Villafranco originally bought his 2002 Mercury Mountaineer, it was supposed to be a family truck. Who, after all, would turn a Mercury Mountaineer into a show ride? As it turns out, Rob Villafranco would. At the time, Rob and his brother Mochi were operating a shop, Southside Customs in their native Houston. When Mochi learned how to install lambo doors, he asked his brother if he’d like to be the first recipient. “I said yes,” Rob says, “and it went on from there.” Just like that, the transformation from family wagon to dazzling show truck was on. He removed the third row of seats he’d just installed and commissioned Street Candy Customs to begin spraying the truck in candy red with a silver base. He then brought in Air Brush Teqniques to add murals – and a lot of murals at that. Inside and out, Rob’s truck – labeled “Clownin on U Hoes” because of its clown theme – is swathed in murals. There are homages to Read More...

March Madness

June 7, 2015

Photos by “Big Rick” Treviño As we’ve mentioned in earlier articles, we’re reaching back through our archives and digging up coverage that was never published in the pages of StreetSeen Magazine. We came across this gem in the bunch. The March Madness show was the kickoff show for the 2013 WEGO Tour in partnership with the Houston Region Tour. It took place at the Armadillo Flea Market in Houston, a popular venue for many car clubs hosting their own car shows. Being the very first show on the tour for the season, the turnout was phenomenal. Many car clubs and participants getting cabin fever over the long winter season were aching to get their rides out of the garage to get them show ready. Like at any WEGO Event, the top clubs were in attendance to get the jump on the Tour’s Club Champion title at the end of the season. Low lows, classics, trucks, bikes, and luxurys filled the parking lot outside and the convention area indoors. Kandies, chrome, Read More...

Spring Break Jam 13

June 4, 2015

Photos by “Big Rick” Treviño In our current issue (Volume 33), we cover the 2015 Spring Break Jam show in South Padre Island, TX. It was our return to the show after missing out on the 2014 event. That show will eventually be posted on this site, We did attend the 2013 event, and are now posting this never before seen coverage for you to enjoy. Like every year in the past, we were extremely excited to make the 6+ hour trip South from Houston to South Padre Island. This show has traditionally been the official start to our car show season. Its not only one of the best shows we cover all year long, it also ranks #1 overall in our books for a fun weekend. Not only is the show a great event, but all of the activities outside of the show make it a must attend show for many enthusiasts. When it comes to the show, we see the very best that the Rio Grande Valley has to offer. We also get to see many rides from beyond the RGV because lots of participants come from miles away to Read More...

Texas Showdown 13

June 3, 2015

Photos by “Big” Rick Treviño Over the next few months, we will be posting coverage from events that were never published in our magazine. One event that we would have liked to have given page time to is the last Texas Showdown that took place at the Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, TX. This event was one of the largest outdoor auto events to hit the Houston area. A lot has changed in the two years since the event. David MacDonald and the crew of Heatwave, Inc. always put on top notch events. As expected, the best of the best rides in the Houston area and beyond were on hand for the show. The hot pavement in the 100 degree blazing heat didn’t stop the die hards from showing off their rides. The burnout contest generated more smoke than usual on the scorching blacktop. The bikini contest was hotter than normal due to the temperatures hitting those scantily clad bodies. Not a problem for Miss Misty Marie, who walked away with the top prize. DJ Twinky and DJ Z of Read More...

Tombstone

June 2, 2015

Story by Jeff Ermann / Jeff@shellmag.com It’s not often a show truck is named after a Kurt Russell movie, but then again it’s not often one finds its way into the winner’s circle at shows after spending several years as a work truck, and several more as a street racer. But that’s the story on Leo Garza’s truck, nicknamed “Tombstone” after Garza’s favorite movie, the 1993 outlaw western starring Russell. Garza drove the ’85 Chevy C10 to work for years before deciding to juice it up and race it — until something happened that would result in the truck taking on a third, different form. “I lost control of it and I wrecked it,” Garza says. “I started redoing it again to race it. At that time, I had another show car, an El Camino, and I saw another show truck like it all fixed up.” That’s when, three years ago, he decided to re-frame it and turn it into a show ride. “My son got involved with it Read More...
